Caldwell Representative Wants To Triple Cigarette Tax

By Vince Trimboli

BOISE - A retired physician is introducing legislation that would more than quadruple the tax on cigarettes.

Representative Robert Ring is the Freshman Republican from Caldwell who wants to hike the current 28 cents per-pack tax to a $1.20. The governor has already proposed raising the cigarette tax, but by 34 cents, to 62 cents a pack.

If they raised the cig tax to $50 per pack, they could be swimming in cash.

State governments around the country, having decided there just aren't enough problems created by the black market for illegal drugs, seem determined to create a new black market for cigarettes. In a few years we'll see ads about how cigarette smoking supports terrorism...

I've already heard that Hezbollah makes money of off smuggling smokes to high-tax states.

We'll end up like those fools in Canada. They tried the sky-high tax route, and ended up with people robbing convenience stores just for cigarettes.

They are rapidly using up the smokers--I hope they don't use this tax in their budget numbers (like Gray Davis is doing.)

You can't tell the difference any more in this "Two-Party Cartel". This country is crying for more political parties especially a conservative one. Think of the revenue from an all-out conservative TV network. And why don't we have one? Because the politicians & elites run the country & true conservativism is nothing that they want anyone near.

You are kidding, aren't you, why would anyone in their right mind pay that price, when it's sooooo avoidable.

You are kidding........?

Yeah, but I still think they are headed down that road. It's just a matter of degree.

To be honest, its not that hard to grow tobacco, although you need have the time to dry the stuff out. A guy with a 300 sq ft green house could make more than enough for himself and probably 10 friends and never spend more than $100 a year on costs. The government, both state and federal, don't grasp that this is entirely possible. You can get a decent greenhouse for $2k and put it behind your house on one Saturday afternoon. And of course, you don't 'sell' to your friends...you simply give them bag of tobacco, and they donate $20 for your friendship. They get enough tobacco for two months. Perfectly legit. They save well over $120 and you make just enough to cover your expenses and enjoy your own 'stash'.

Send that physician back to school for a course in economics. Laffer Curve tax information shouldbe in the welcome packet for any legislator.

Another Republican signed up to the Dems' agenda, it would appear.

It's getting harder and harder to tell them apart.

You know, what we are witnessing is a 'race to the top' and see which state can have the highest tobacco taxes. It's only a matter of time before ciggie taxes are uniformly outrageous/ridiculous across the country. In any case, the states will eventually start taxing all catalog and internet sales, using tobacco to get the ball rolling.
